Well, when Instagram announced they were going to focus more on helping creators out this year, they really meant it!
It was announced yesterday that a small number of content creators will be testing out the ability to have users subscribe to their content. In a blog post and on their @creators page, Instagram announced they will be launching a test of subscriptions with more and more creators being added to the program in the next few weeks.
What in the world are subscriptions? Users can subscribe and pay a monthly fee ranging from $0.99-$99.99 (that the content creator creates themselves!) to access subscriber-only content. Subscribers can expect to get access to exclusive stories, lives, specialty DMs, and more!
One of the biggest questions for Subscriptions is will Instagram take a cut of the cash? According to Co-Head of Product, Ashley Yuki said they won’t be until at least 2023.

The first 10 creators have been chosen and now have the “subscribe” button (similar to YouTube!) on their feeds now. The creators include astrologer Aliza Kelly, dancer Kelsey Cook, basketball player Sedona Prince, Olympian Jordan Chiles, and more.
On his own page, Adam Mosseri said that subscriptions are “one of the best ways” for creators to have a more sustainable and consistent income. While some creators already monetize their Close Friends Story (check out you can do the same here), this is an easier way for creators to make a passive income.
This isn’t the first social media platform to go towards the subscription model, obviously, Patreon, Substack, and TikTok are some of the first along with Twitter, which introduced Super Follows last year.
