Although TikTok is one of the largest and fastest-growing social media platforms today, it’s not for everyone. Whether you’ve decided it’s too addicting (the average U.S. user spends about 45.8 minutes a day on the app) or you want to spend your time elsewhere, if you’ve decided to delete your TikTok account, we’re here to guide you through the process. Rest assured that the steps are simple and quick and can be done on either your phone or desktop.
In this Flick article, we’ll walk you through the process of deleting your TikTok account. So without further ado, let’s dive in.
How to delete your TikTok using the app
If you have the app installed on your phone, simply open the app, navigate to the security and privacy screen (you can find it by clicking on the three lines at the top right of the page), and click on the “Manage Account” option. Then, simply click on the “Delete Account” button.
The app will then ask you some questions, including whether you want to download your data before deleting your profile and what your reasons are for leaving TikTok. After answering these questions and choosing to “Continue”, TikTok will send you a verification code.
Once you’ve entered the verification code on the app’s screen, you’ll have one last chance to turn it back before deleting your account (you’ll still have thirty days from that point to reactivate it if you wish). Otherwise, you can confirm with the “Delete Account” button, and you’ll be redirected to the TikTok login screen, and at that point, you’re good to go!
How to delete your TikTok using your web browser
If you prefer, you can also choose to delete your TikTok account on your web browser. The steps are very similar to the steps for deleting your account through the app.
First, you’ll need to log in to your profile. After logging in, find your profile picture at the top of the screen and to the right, and click on the settings option. Find the “Manage Account” option, then choose “Delete Account.”
You’ll then be presented with similar, if not identical, questions to the ones you would be asked in the app, including whether you want to download your data and why you’re choosing to leave TikTok. After clicking through these questions, you can confirm that you do want to delete your account. That’s it!
Reactivating an Account
As we mentioned previously, if you choose to delete your account, TikTok allows you a 30-day grace period to reactivate your account. After that, if you want to rejoin TikTok, you’ll have to start from scratch with a new account. Here are the steps for reactivating your account within the 30-day period if you choose to do so:
- Simply log back into your account.
- You’ll be presented with a notification that there is a “Deactivation pending” on your account.
- You’ll have the option to click a “reactivate” button.
- If you do so, you will cancel the deactivation process and your account will be recovered.
- Failing to click the “reactivate” button and logging out will continue the deletion process.
What happens to my videos when I delete my account?
After your account has been deactivated for thirty days, it is permanently deleted, along with all of your videos and other data in the app. At this point, they are no longer recoverable. The system is designed this way to prevent you from having to personally delete each of your videos and messages.
