The cohesive look of their grid makes you want to scroll and stalk their feed (or this could just be me!) for hours, and you think to yourself, “how did they make it look so perfect?” Well, that is what we call a preset, my friend. What are Instagram presets?

Instagram presets are filters you can use on your Instagram posts. The presets are a series of different filters you can use on your photos to make sure your feed looks consistent.
Instagram has its own presets you can use through its app, or there are plenty of other presets that you find online. When it comes to presets, we recommend that you use either the same one or very similar ones when you’re creating content to create that cohesive look across your feed.
The best part? Presets can be downloaded on your computer or phone, so it can be a quick and easy way for you to quickly edit and upload your photo to your feed.
You can also create your own presets for Instagram if you can’t find a preset you actually like. The photo editing app Lightroom is a really easy way for you to create your own presets.

Why use Instagram presets?

Now that you know what they are, why should you use presets?

Saves you time

One of the biggest reasons is that you’ll save so much time when you use presets. Instead of spending hours editing and trying to figure out what kind of look you want for your photo, you can add one of your presets to the photo.
Simply head to whatever app you have for your preset, edit your photo, and upload. Simple. Easy. Effective.

Creates a strong brand identity

When people scroll through your feed, making sure that every photo uses the same type of filter or preset will give your feed a strong identity. While this might not seem super important to you, it could be super important to the person who is trying to decide whether they want to follow you or not.
Once you figure out what preset works for your photos and fits with your style, you can start using the same one across every photo/video on your feed to achieve the same look across your profile.

Improves your post quality

The best way to get people to engage with your content is by uploading beautiful, quality photos to the ‘gram. You’re not going to interact with a poorly edited, or not that interesting photo, are you? No! And neither will your followers.
With presets, you can edit your photo to the best quality possible, stay in line with your brand identity, and give your followers what they want: a beautiful, well-edited photo.

Tips for using presets

Now that you have your presets downloaded and ready to go, what next? It’s time to start using them! We’ve got some tips on how to effectively use them for your feed.

Use a good photo

I know, I know. Duh. But even the best presets can’t save a bad photo, so make sure the quality and size are good, you’ve got the subject in frame, there’s enough natural light, and it’s not blurry (unless the blurry effect is what you’re going for—then by all means!).

Make adjustments

Just because you’re using a preset, it doesn’t mean that it’s going to look great on every single photo you use. Sometimes, like in life, you need to make some slight tweaks and adjustments to make it work for you! Play around with the exposure, reduce the shadows, straighten, crop, whatever your little heart desires!
